Recklessness

In these works, everything is built on contradiction. They are massive, but appear light. The pattern strives to bring order, but it also destroys the integrity of the form. This is the main theme — a state of being stuck in a loop, when some thought or feeling gets trapped within us, and we cannot break free from this cycle.

It was important to me that the sculptures were equal characters to one another, which is why they have the same size and proportions; this also creates and sets the rhythm. The surface of the sculptures is organized by a disjointed pattern of identical, obsessive spots. Each of them is a cloud locked in a cage. This pattern simultaneously structures the form and seeks to destroy it, creating an internal contradiction. In every aspect, they contradict themselves in form, color, logic, and meaning.

The story of this image is personal, an important context for me, but it does not dictate the interpretation and is not a key to deciphering for the viewer. A friend sent me a photo of a peculiar cloud that I liked for its unnatural shape. Now, this image has turned into an endlessly repeating pattern that no longer has anything to do with the sky but obsessively, almost recklessly, fills the entire surface.
